Unleashing Innovation and Collaboration at the GETM4 Sandpit in Newcastle

The GETM4 Sandpit event at Northumbria University Newcastle was a remarkable event dedicated to advancing global management and entrepreneurship.
From the 8th to the 12th of July of 2024, participants engaged in dynamic sessions, workshops, and cultural experiences, all aimed at fostering innovation, inclusivity, and strategic progress. Here’s a detailed recap of the event’s highlights:
Setting the Stage for Progress
The event kicked off with an overview by Prof. Alison Pearce, who emphasized the importance of inclusivity and new opportunities in research initiatives. A standout moment was Prof. Graham Wynn’s keynote speech, the Northumbria University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education. He discussed the integration of student talent management with Northumbria’s education strategy.
According to the Pro-Vice Chancellor, “UNN has a responsibility towards the future students in the Northumbria region, those who chose to stay in the region for their studies. The university has a proud tradition of fostering the entrepreneurial agency of students, from the Business Clinic to the Business Incubator, with students being supported up until 5 years after graduation.”
The afternoon sessions provided updates on various research streams, including Higher Education Innovation & Creative Confidence, Data Repository & Publication Strategy, and the Dissemination Exploitation Communication Plan.
Dynamic Sessions and Workshops
Day 2 was packed with interactive workshops and sessions. The focus was on enhancing researcher development and fostering an inclusive academic environment. Key sessions included a deliverable development session, a workshop on the creation of digital innovation ethics case studies, and activities on the Future of Higher Education through Design Futures.
The afternoon was dedicated to supporting individual entrepreneurs within academia, with focus groups on workplace well-being and innovative potential. The day wrapped up with a plenary session summarizing key insights.
Innovation and Collaboration at Newcastle Racecourse
The highlight of Day 3 was the Innovation Festival Daily Dash, “Strive for Five,” led by David Parks ,founder and Director of SkillMill.
Participants engaged in a design sprint focused on the United Nations’ World Clean Up Day, generating creative solutions and actionable plans. The day was all about harnessing creativity and teamwork to drive social and environmental impact.
Data Collection and Strategic Planning
Day 4 focused on data collection and strategic planning. Morning sessions included focus groups on researcher development and interviews with individual entrepreneurs and academics.
The Project Steering Committee reviewed progress and planned future activities, ensuring alignment with project goals.
Building Social Capital and Cultural Exploration
The final day was dedicated to building social capital and exploring Northumbria’s rich cultural heritage. Attendees visited Lindisfarne and Bamburgh Castle, guided by Lundgren Tours, – a walking tour company owned by a graduate from UNN’s Business School- and explored historic towns and popular film/TV locations.
The day also included a visit to Barter Books in Alnwick and a scenic view of Alnwick Castle. Additionally, a survey on respectful translation practices was conducted to improve communication strategies.
The UK Sandpit event was a vibrant blend of learning, collaboration, and cultural exploration. It provided valuable insights and fostered a spirit of innovation and inclusivity. The GETM4 project is grateful to everyone who participated and made the event a success!
