Co-Design for Inclusion in Software Development Design

Co-design towards more inclusive software development

Below a description of each session of the training. Distributed materials will be available on this page at the end of each session.

Introduction

Tuesday, 29th April 2025 - ONLINE - 13:30-16:30 (Irish Time)

This online live session aims to provide participants with a foundational understanding of co-design, highlighting its significance, accessibility considerations, ethical implications, and real-world examples of effective and ineffective practices.

The session will be delivered through a combination of live classes, independent learning, and online quizzes, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. Key themes such as participatory design, co-design, design thinking, Universal design and accessibility will be discussed. The importance of co-design will be explored, emphasizing its role in design processes.

ASYNCHRONOUS CONSULTATION OF MATERIALS

Tuesday, 29th April → Tuesday, 6th May, 2025 -

This session focuses on developing a deep understanding of co-design through an asynchronous approach. It covers four key areas:

  1. Understanding Each Phase of Co-Design – Learners explore the stages of co-design (Discover, Interpret, Ideate, Experiment, Evaluate) through recorded videos where the process is being explained to students and co-designers.
  2. Using Co-Design Templates – Templates are introduced with one-page descriptions or short videos explaining their purpose and facilitation tips. Practical exercises help apply these templates in real scenarios.
  3. Designing a Good Project – Learners receive guidance on creating strong project/design briefs through slides, activities, and examples.
  4. Becoming a Good Facilitator – Additional video guidelines provide further insights into facilitation.

This session combines videos, slides, templates, and practical exercises to enhance learning and application in the field of co-design.

Q&A

Tuesday, 6th May 2025 - ONLINE - 14:00-15:00 (Irish Time)

Q&A on the asynchronous material.

Experiment co-design

Thursday, 8th May - ONSITE and ONLINE - TU Dublin Central Quad - Room 208
13:30-16:30 (Irish Time)
Dinner at Arlington Hotel at 7:00 PM
Friday, 9th May - ONSITE and ONLINE - TU Dublin Central Quad - Room CQ 402
12:00-15:00 (Irish Time)

The activity will take place in a hyflex format with 4 co-design groups live in TU Dublin and 1 co-design groups online.

This live/blended co-design session focuses on experimenting with co-design through five key stages: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.

Each team will produce two key outputs:

  1. A final prototype design.
  2. A charter document outlining iterations across templates and design stages.

The session emphasizes iterative learning and practical application in the co-design process.

In depth understanding of co-design in software development

Thursday, 15th May 2025 - ONLINE - 13:30-16:30 (Irish Time)

This session focuses on reinforcing co-design principles within software development through group work and practical activities. Key components include:

  • Review of Co-Design: Revisiting key steps and the Inclusion Charter in co-design activities.
  • Group Work: Presenting results, lessons learned, reflections, and application of co-design in different contexts.
  • Process Mapping: Drawing and reworking processes to integrate co-design opportunities.
  • Final Presentations: Each group presents their project charter.
  • Individual Reflection: Participants submit written reflections on their learnings and how to apply them in their work.

The session concludes with presentations and individual submissions, ensuring both collaborative and personal insights are captured.
