The optimal candidates for energy renewal programs are organizations, that want new solutions, but are not overwhelmed by them, due to crisis mentality. The crisis mentality increases the feeling of being overwhelmed, as it is not enough that executives are actively supporting the energy renewal programs, employees also have to have the feeling of being able to contribute. Instead, if they feel they are under intense pressure, focusing on immediate survival (for example due to rapid growth of the company), they might not be able to distance themselves and have full recovery of energy, due to mentioned worries. A lot of time energy is taken for granted, however with a higher level of energy (or capacity) one can have more done in less time at a higher level of engagement, and nevertheless with more sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees are expending time and psychological energy to various parts of life: work, family, friends, personal growth and health. As the world develops so does the concept work-life balance. Word life present more than just caring for dependent children, it also includes other types of caring (e.g. siblings, friends, pets) as well as noncaring activities (hobbies, education, religious, social, cultural). The \u201clife\u201d demands may conflict work, but skills gained may have positive effects on it. Due to the changing nature of working arrangements the work also needs to be seen beyond traditional model of employment since there is a growing number of people working outside of it (e.g. zero\u2010hour contracts, working for temporary employment agencies, self\u2010employed, gig economy). Broad view on the concept is essential. Work-life balance is a personal and therefore subjective viewpoint on how employee manage to balance personal and professional life meaning there is no tension between work and non-work roles. Therefore, SMEs need to be aware the meaning of work-life balance is not the same for all people, it depends on the context of conversation as well as on a personal viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem nowadays is that work and careers take up a lot of time which leads to insufficient time for other areas in our lives and increase in workload is not affecting only employees, but also organizational performance. For SMEs good work-life balance of employees means better chances for recruitment and retention of talented employees gender equality, less work-life stress and absenteeism, and greater societal well-being. Given the importance of flexibility for young people, this practice can facilitate a given SME to become the employer of choice. Flexibility is considered an inducement, which enables employees some degrees of control over their choices at work. There are different options for SMEs when it comes to introducing flexible work schedules, by offering flexibility in time, in location, or workload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flexibility in time<\/strong>&nbsp;can be offered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>changing the beginning and end of the shift around a core schedule;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>planning a compressed workweek, which involves compressing workweek to fewer than five days in one week or fewer than 10 days in two weeks;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>allowing flexible shift, also during unusual hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flexibility in location<\/strong>&nbsp;typically involves telework. While working from home can reduce the time spent on commuting, there are downsides related to alienation, fewer opportunities for creative brainstorming, and less socializing and teamwork. To create a sense of belonging SME should set up virtual coffee times, lunches or arrange a call once a week between a remote worker and an employee in headquarters. Such gatherings help bring people together and increase team spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flexibility in workload<\/strong>&nbsp;includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reduced-load (an employee assuming a smaller amount of responsibilities, which is reflected in the lower amount of pay);&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>job sharing (multiple people sharing a 1-person job).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other formal work-life policies comprise:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Paid and unpaid leave<\/strong>&nbsp;(e.g. maternal and paternal leave, where mother is working 2 days and 3 days off, and the father is working 3 days and 2 days off with a young baby),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>On-site facilities and services<\/strong>&nbsp;(e.g., on-site childcare and eldercare centers, rooms at work for nursing, gyms, health clinics, dry cleaning), and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other benefits related to non-work lives<\/strong>&nbsp;(e.g., lunch-and-learn seminars that could include workshops on attaining work-life balance, best practices for managing the different boundaries, strategies for dealing with overload, and urgent issues and recharging at work, insurance plan).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other benefits related to work-life balance include the opportunity to take a sabbatical in order to pursue other aspirations such as hobbies, further education, or traveling the world are particularly appealing to people with dual-centric aspirations, enabling them to better manage professional and personal lives. These benefits and their attractiveness depend on the employee\u2019s career stage. Young employees without families may appreciate the flexible work arrangements, but once they have families, they use the other benefits as well tailored for young families. Millennials also want special summer or holiday hours that are different from regular work hours, and extra vacation time for a job well done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Above mentioned policies can be categorized into two groups based on the outcome SME is trying to achieve. Enabling work-life policies to allow employees to control where, when, and how much they work, so they can manage the different life roles better. Enclosing policies enable employees to spend as much time as possible at work (e.g. on-site services and facilities such as health clinics). Can the staff really be trusted?<\/summary>\n<p>To some extent flexible working hours is actually quite a structured practice since a set of detailed rules or guidelines need to be agreed between management and employees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there are certain levels of freedom, good managers and employees will act responsibly. It has been proven that when you give employees the responsibility of managing their own time and the dignity of setting a work pattern that is compatible with their workload, they will perform very well indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of staff can be trusted and when an individual decides to abuse the rules, workmates tend to pull them into line simply to protect their own flexibility. It is true that all employees should have an equal right to request consideration for a flexible work arrangement. However, whether a particular flexible work arrangement is feasible for a particular employee depends on a variety of factors, including the nature of the work assignment and characteristics of the employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Work which demands physical presence (for example, receptionist, maintenance, or food service) cannot be done while telecommuting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An employee who needs close personal supervision (for example, someone in the probationary period, or someone with a poor performance record) may be required to be at work only when the supervisor is present.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An employee who needs to have constant, easy access to materials or to equipment may be required to be present when those materials or pieces of equipment are accessible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No employee should be permitted to work in situations that are potentially dangerous, due to equipment or security concerns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are, however, ways to work around some of the above concerns.
